The Waddell Fountain has been noted in one of the books as one of the best Winnipeg Landmarks, it as set as a great example of a “high Victorian architecture”. The Waddell Fountain is also regarded as a “magnificent collection of flying buttresses and pinnacles”, this is because of the water flowing out of the lion’s head, one of the major features that The Waddell Fountain has.
The Waddell Fountain was named after Mrs. Waddell; The Waddell Fountain was then constructed after her death. On January 23, 1908 Emily Margaret Waddell passed away. But, she has left a very unusual provision. She stated that if her husband remarries from her $56,000 estate, $10,000 would be taken out and it shall be used to construct a public figure within Central Park.
But The Waddell Fountain was later constructed in 1911, after her husband remarried. The Waddell Fountain was then designed by Winnipeg architect John Manuel. The Waddell Fountain was later completed in 1914.
Some would say that The Waddell Fountain was a wife’s revenge or perhaps a tribute of love to her beloved husband. Some suggest that Emily Margaret Waddell wishes to have a lasting memory of her husbands love at Central Park. But, up until today The Waddell Fountain still has its remarkable beauty.
