The Maids of the Mist Fountain
St. Joseph, Michigan is one of the most wonderful cities that you will find on the US. It also holds one of the most amazing fountains; this is The Maids of the Mist Fountain. The Maids of the Mist Fountain played an important role in the history of St. Joseph, Michigan. For in fact The Maids of the Mist Fountain has been with the St. Joseph for over 100 years.
This astonishing fountain has seen the St. Joseph grow from being a rowdy village of lumberman and sailors in Michigan that is a quite city that has six municipalities that is branching out. The Maids of the Mist Fountain was made in 1872, it was made by the J.W Fiske Iron Works in New York City. After it was completed, it was later shipped to Chicago and The Maids of the Mist Fountain became a part of the Inter – State Industrial Exposition during 1873 – 1891.
The Maids of the Mist Fountain was only moved to St. Joseph after the owner of Whitcomb Hotel purchased The Maids of the Mist Fountain for $500 in 1892. At the time The Maids of the Mist Fountain was bought to St. Joseph it instantly became a famous landmark in St. Joseph, it was popularly known as the “stone maidens”.
A local historian in the late 1930’s gave names to the maidens of the fountain. The maiden facing west was named Constance, and the other one was named Hope. During Memorial Day and Labor Day, the fountain are shrouded with gentle mists that provides The Maids of the Mist Fountain an amazing view.
